Our Story
Rowboat"Seventeen biologists and a rowboat" launch the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole - following the dictum of Louis Agassiz to "study nature, not books."

The MBL occupies more than 100 acres in the village of Woods Hole. One hundred buildings comprise the physical plant, including six research laboratory buildings, two administration buildings, and a variety of support facilities. The year-round Swope Conference Center, five dormitories, and 75 summer cottages can accommodate nearly 800 people. The Swope Center dining facility can accommodate 350.
