Throughout its history, the Marine Biological Laboratory has concentrated on providing the world's top biological scientists with a place where they can focus on their research, not distracted by departmental affairs, committee work, or other aspects of university life. The MBL provides both the resource support and the intellectual environment that enable many scientists to do their best work.
The year-round research program fosters an environment where researchers can engage in long-range projects using modern instrumentation and access to computer workstations and databases. The program hosts 40 Ph.D.-level investigators working in major research areas such as: neurobiology and sensory physiology; cellular, developmental, and reproductive biology; and marine biotechnology and aquaculture.

Research at the Marine Biological Laboratory is conducted throughout the year at a number of centers, including the Josephine Bay Paul Center for Comparative Molecular Biology and Evolution, the Ecosystems Center, and the Marine Resources Center, as well as nearly 20 independent programs and laboratories led by individual scientists. Research funding from major foundations, agencies, and industries sustains a great many of these programs and projects.
In the summer the Woods Hole community gains new temporary residentsmany of the world's top research scientists arrive as investigators, faculty, and lecturers. At the end of the summer, they emerge with information on which to build further research, or fixed points on which to pivot their current work.
