Larval Sea Scallop Culture

This winter, staff at the Shellfish Hatchery located on the campus of Massachusetts Maritime Academy successfully spawned sea scallop (Placopecten magellanicus) broodstock obtained from the wild.   As space was limited in their facility, hatchery manager Beth Walton transported the larval sea scallops to the Marine Resources Center at the Marine Biological Laboratory (Woods Hole, MA) where they are currently being raised (see picture at right).  The purpose of this webpage is to document the growth and development of these organisms, thereby this page will be updated frequently.
