Revision: #2, June 4, 2012
All scuba diving and other forms of underwater diving conducted under the auspices of the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) must be conducted in full accordance with rules and regulations established by the MBL’s Diving Control Board. Details on these rules and regulations are available from the MBL’s Environmental, Health and Safety Office.
2.1 This policy applies to all MBL personnel carrying out scientific diving and to any other personnel who wish to use MBL facilities to support their scientific diving. Scientific diving is defined as all diving performed by individuals necessary to or part of a scientific, research, or educational activity in conjunction with a project or study under the jurisdiction of the MBL.
2.2 This policy does not apply to recreational diving conducted by MBL personnel. The MBL does not provide facilities for recreational diving.
2.3 This policy also does not apply to divers who are not diving under MBL auspices. However, such divers must voluntarily participate in the MBL’s diving program if they wish to have any access to MBL’s diving equipment or facilities. Divers from other institutions are otherwise governed by the diving policies established by their home institutions.
