What can I do to avoid spam?

YOU CAN - use filters in your e-mail software to block spam. Here at the MBL, we provide spam filtering. If you are using an MBL e-mail account, you should set your e-mail software to redirect spam to trash or a designated folder. Our spam filter appends [SPAM] to the beginning of the subject line on e-mails suspected of being spam.

DO NOT - put your e-mail address on a web page, especially in "mailto:" links.

Avoid IRC, or use a false user name while connecting to IRC (Note: this may be a violation of the IRC server administrator's policy, so check this before you connect using a false user name).

Use the privacy settings provided by your instant messaging software

Use a false email address when participating in web based discussion groups

DO NOT - supply your e-mail address to a commercial web site - if the web site requires an e-mail address, use a false e-mail address.

DO NOT - put your e-mail address on product registration cards

DO NOT - put your e-mail address on any form provided by a business, even if the form asks for it

DO NOT - e-mail the "unsubscribe" or "remove" address often supplied on spam. Some spammers use this address to verify that the spam was read. The spammer will then sell your e-mail address to other spammers, who will also spam you.

DO NOT - give your e-mail address out unless you absolutely have to.
