Information about MBL's Spam filter system

We are using one of the most advanced SPAM filters on the internet. It continually adapts itself to detect spam.

No e-mails are discarded by the SPAM filter:

E-mails which are suspected of being spam have [SPAM] appended to the beginning of the subject line. In your e-mail client, you should create a rule to redirect the suspected spam to trash or to a designated folder.

Email from addresses on our whitelist will not be filtered:

A whitelist is a list of e-mail addresses which are assumed safe. E-mails received from the e-mail addess on the whitelist are not scanned by the spam filter. To add an e-mail address to the whitelist, send an e-mail to whitelist@mbl.edu. In the body of the e-mail, list the e-mail addresses you wish to add to the whitelist. You may include multiple e-mail addresses in the body of the e-mail, as long as you list only one e-mail address per line.

Do not put anything else in the body of the e-mail.

Please report SPAM to the SPAM filter:

The spam filter does a good job, but occasionally a spam will slip through, or an email is incorrectly labeled as spam. When you receive a spam, please report it to the spam filter to help improve the filter's performance. To report the spam, forward it to: spam@mbl.edu

You should also report emails incorrectly labeled as spam to the spam filter. To report an e-mail incorrectly labeled as spam, forward the e-mail to: notspam@mbl.edu

Remember: The more input we have from you, the better the filter will work.
