MBL Useful Phone Features
Individual Account Codes (IAC):
Individual Account Codes (IAC) allows the Facility Restriction Levels on a phone to be temporarily overridden so that long distance calls may be placed from a phone that is normally restricted. IAC numbers are issued to MBL affiliates upon request. When your IAC is used for a call, charges for the call are billed to your IAC number. IAC's are useful for areas where several individuals may be using the same telephone line to place long distance calls and desire accountability as to who placed the call, or in areas where the telephone cannot be secured from unauthorized use.
The following is a list of helpful features depending on phone type:
Call Transfer:
Allows telephone users to transfer outside or internal calls to other telephones within the system without attendant assistance. This feature provides a convenient way to connect a party with someone better qualified to handle the call. Single-line telephone users momentarily flash the switch hook or press the Recall button, dial the desired extension, and hang up. Multi-appearance telephone users press the Transfer button, dial the desired extension number, and press the Transfer button again. This is an optional feature at the system level.
Call Forwarding:
Call Forwarding provides four functions
- Call Forwarding All Calls - Allows calls to be forwarded to an internal extension, external (off-net) number, an attendant, or an attendant group. Can be administered by pressing *3 on the keypad to activate and #3 to deactivate.
- Call Forwarding Override - Allows the user at the forwarded-to extension to override Call Forwarding and either initiate a call or transfer a call back to the forwarded-from extension.
- Call Forward Busy/Don't answer - Allows calls to be forwarded when the called extension is busy or when the call is not answered after an administrable interval. If the extension is busy, the call forwards immediately. If the extension is not busy, the incoming call rings the called extension, then forwards only if it remains unanswered longer than the administered interval.
- Call Forwarding Off Net - Allows calls forwarded off net to be tracked for busy or no-answer conditions. The system brings the call back for further call-coverage processing if specified conditions are met. This feature is particularly useful for Telecommuters, who can have their on-site office calls forwarded to their home offices.
Automatic Hold:
Allows multi-function telephone users to alternate easily between two or more calls. For example, with automatic hold, selection of a second call automatically puts the active call (if any) on hold and makes the second call active. This feature can be activated on a system-wide basis only. When automatic hold is not activated, the selection of the second call drops the first call.
Automatic Redial:
The automatic redial feature allows you to press the redial button without lifting the handset or pressing the [SPKR] button.
Redial:
The redial feature allows you to press one button to redial the last telephone number dialed manually from the dial pad. This includes on and off campus calls, as well as long distance numbers.
Message Light:
The message light indicates whether or not you have voice mail messages waiting for your retrieval.
Mute:
The mute feature temporarily suspends your ability to speak to other parties during a telephone conversation. This is especially useful if you need to have a conversation with someone in your office without the other party on the line hearing you. It is suggested that you never place your hand over the receiver, for it may actually amplify your conversation with the other party
Restriction Levels:
Telephone lines can have restricted access to prevent unauthorized long distance. The available restriction levels are:
- Incoming calls only
- Campus only (289)
- Falmouth Area only
- Massachusetts only
- US
- International/Unrestricted access
Speaker Phone:
The speaker phone feature (digital phone sets) allows you to place and receive calls without having to lift the handset. This is convenient for times where you need to have your hands free for other tasks while you are on the phone. The speaker phone is also useful for limited conference calls, enabling other people to participate in the conversation. However, the directional capability of the microphone does limit the clarity and effectiveness of the call. The installation of an actual "Conference Telephone" is recommended to perform this type of activity.
Status Light:
Lights by the line appearances on your set indicate whether or not a line is in use.
Volume Adjustments:
You can adjust the volume of the ring, the handset, and other items depending on the model to suit your needs.
Test:
Provides the ability to test the light functions on the digital sets. If your set is not working correctly, contact the Help Desk at 7654.
Clock:
On certain telephones that have a display, the date and time will appear when the line is idle.
Call Park:
Allows you to put a call on hold and then retrieve a call from any other telephone on the system. This is helpful when you are on a call and need to go to another location for information. It also allows you to answer a call from any telephone after being paged by a telephone user or an attendant.
Display:
When you lift the handset, the date and time clears from the display. As you dial a number, or use memory dialing, that number appears in the display. On digital sets timers allow you to monitor the duration of your calls, and display the number of minutes you are on the phone. You may also display numbers stored for memory dialing.
Distinctive Ringing Patterns:
You can identify where an incoming call has originated by its ringing pattern:
- one ring - on campus
- two rings - off campus
- three rings - a feature activation, i.e., automatic callback.
Intercom:
The intercom feature enables users to place priority calls to other multi-line telephones within the same intercom work group. Intercom is only available on telephone sets.
Memory Dialing:
The memory dialing feature allows you to program your telephone so that you can quickly dial frequently called numbers. The amount of numbers stored depends on your model's capability.
