Welcome. We study the marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus, a key marine primary producer and ubiquitous phytoplankter, especially in coastal regions. We aim to better understand how environmental variables, microbial interactions, and underlying diversity structure affect population abundance and dynamics.  We use a combination of in situ, high resolution time series observations from the Martha’s Vineyard Coastal Observatory (MVCO), isolated cultures and in-lab experiments, environmental sequencing, and mathematical modeling to explore the above questions and combine insights to arrive at a more complete understanding of this organism’s ecology.
