My lab works on post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in Trypanosoma brucei. We study the enzymes responsible for degradation of mRNAs, and the roles of RNA-binding proteins in regulating degradation. Methods used include Tandem Affinity purification of RNA-protein complexes, tethering of proteins onto RNA, using microarrays to profile mutants and to determine RNA-binding protein specificity, and real-time PCR, in addition to the standard tools of trypanosome genetic manipulation and RNA characterisation.
We have already characterised the pathways of regulated and consitutive mRNA degradation and have identified several RNA-binding proteins which control the abundance of specific mRNAs.
Heidelberg is a major European centre for molecular biology, with ready availability of state-of-the art equipment and lively seminar series with international speakers. It is also a beautiful historic town.
In the coming year there will be several post-doc or PhD student vacancies in my group. Please contact me or one of my students at the meeting for more information. Knowledge of German is not necessary.
POSTDOCTORAL POSITION as RESEARCH ASSOCIATE to study trypanosome RNA editing catalyzed by a mega-dalton multiprotein complex.
Our lab currently studies the catalytic activity and organization of RNA-protein interactions in editing complexes. Enthusiastic candidates with a background in molecular biology and biochemistry are encouraged to apply. We combine powerful methodologies to study functional macromolecular interactions using purified components in free-cell systems and transgenic trypanosomes. Our recent publications include: J Biol Chem. 282:4265-76 (2007); RNA 121:1219-1228 (2006); NAR. 33:1 (2005); RNA 10:914(2004).
This NIH-funded position includes a generous benefits package (retirement, family medical, dental etc). Please feel free to contact me at the meeting for additional information on the projects.
Applications including a CV and the name, email and address of three references can be sent by email to Jorge Cruz-Reyes (cruzrey@tamu.edu). Tel. no. 979- 458-3374.
