A closer look at the difference between Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria.

Gram positive
Gram Negative
Retains the gram stain Does not retain the gram stain
Thick peptidoglycan layer. No outer membrane of lipopolysaccharide. Thin peptidoglycan layer. An outer membrane of lipopolysaccharide.
Does not induce a clotting reaction in Limulus Induces a clotting reaction in Limulus
Comprises most terrestrial bacteria. Comprises most marine bacteria.

Sources of LPS - LPS is liberated in small amounts by Gram - bacteria throughout their growth and division. Larger amounts can be liberated when the cell dies and undergoes lysis (bursting).
