Plasmodium falciparum gametocytogenesis
Research Associate/Postdoctoral Fellowship is available to study gametocytogenesis in Plasmodium falciparum. Specifically, the focus of the project is to define the molecular basis of the switch between asexual reproduction and sexual differentiation, which is required for malaria transmission. The overall goal of the research is to develop new strategies to control the growth and maturation of the parasites and thereby inhibit the spread of malaria. A PhD and permission to work in the US are required. Applicants should have research experience in cell and/or developmental biology. Experience with cell culture and molecular biology techniques is preferred. Post-doctoral position at UC Irvine School of Medicine
Post-doctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Ruslan Aphasizhev at the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, UC Irvine School of Medicine. Our research focuses on the mechanisms of RNA processing in African trypanosomes and Leishmania. The areas of mitochondrial mRNA editing and turnover, guide RNA biogenesis and function, and nuclear RNA surveillance are of particular interest. Our collaborative efforts extend into structural biology, mass spectrometry and bioinformatics. Qualifications for the position include strong background in molecular biology and biochemistry, and a record of peer-reviewed publications. Experience in structural biology, transcriptome analysis, mass spectrometry or parasite genetics is desirable but not required. Scenic UCI campus is located in the coastal Orange County and offers a wide variety of on-campus housing, recreational and cultural activities. Expansion in Emerging Pathogens Research
The Department of Infectious Diseases and Pathology, College of Veterinary Medicine and the Emerging Pathogens Institute at the University of Florida are seeking to hire a mid-career scientist in a tenure-track position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor to lead research program expansion. Applicants should possess the PhD, DVM/PhD or equivalent degree(s) and have an outstanding international reputation as evidenced by publications in research journals. Primary responsibilities will be to build a competitive research program focused on the control of vector-borne infectious diseases including zoonoses and diseases affecting either humans or animals. The encumbent will participate in hiring a cluster of junior faculty to add depth and vigor to the program. Teaching may be at the professional, postdoctoral and graduate levels. The Department has excellent research facilities and programs in infectious disease and comparative immunology, and the Emerging Pathogens Institute at the University of Florida is a campus-wide program of excellence to study emerging pathogens.

Postdoctoral Position, University of Michigan

An NIH sponsored postdoctoral position is available beginning Dec. 1, 2008 or soon thereafter to investigate the function of cathepsin proteases in Toxoplasma gondii, an opportunistic protozoan parasite that can cause severe disease (encephalitis, retinitis, birth-defects) in humans and animals. T. gondii is a tractable parasite that is easily cultured in vitro, has excellent animal models and is amenable genetic manipulation. The parasite expresses two cathepsin endoproteases that appear to function together to activate invasion related proteins in a novel multivesicular endosome within the parasite. Cathepsin function will be investigated by a variety of in vitro and in vivo approaches including analysis of the recombinant proteins, targeted gene-disruption and gene-tagging, use of small molecule inhibitors, etc.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. and/or M.D., or equivalent degree and a strong background in protein chemistry and molecular biology. Experience with fluorescence microscopy would also be advantageous.

Postdoctoral Scientist, Laboratory of Dr. Ken Stuart
A Postdoctoral position is available in a project that will identify and validate drug targets in Trypanosoma brucei. The project is part of an international consortium whose goal is to generate a robust pipeline of anti-trypanosomatid drugs with product profiles that are needed for advancement to clinical trials and deployment. This role provides excellent opportunities to work within a team in multiple labs that have extensive complementary expertise, technical capabilities, facilities, and ongoing studies pursuing the most promising directions for drug discovery. Malaria Parasitology/Vector Biology Post-Doctoral Position at NIH.
A post-doctoral position is available in the Mosquito Immunity and Vector Competence Unit from the Laboratory of Malaria and Vector Research at NIH.
Our Unit investigates the malaria transmission. We explore how the immune responses of the mosquito limit Plasmodium infection and how the parasite evades these responses. We have recently identified several genes that play an important role in limiting Plasmodium falciparum infection such as the STAT transcription factor and an immunomodulatory peroxidase produced by midgut epithelial cells. We would like to explore the biology mediating these effects and identify the regulatory networks or effector molecules involved. We are currently mapping a gene(s) that allow some Plasmodium falciparum strains to escape the mosquito¹s immune response. Experience with molecular and cell biology, parasitology and/or microarray analysis is highly desirable. The requirements for this position are: Ph.D degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology, Parasitology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Immunology or related areas. At least one first-author publication. No more than 5 years since the date of completion of Ph.D. degree. POSTDOCTORAL POSITION: Molecular and Biochemical Parasitology
POSTDOCTORAL POSITION available to investigate the molecular basis of epigenetics and gene expression during development of the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Related to the malaria parasite, Toxoplasma causes serious disease in immunocompromised (AIDS) patients due to the ability of the parasite to develop into cysts in the body. We have shown that epigenetics plays an important role in this critical developmental transition (Sullivan et al., 2006, Cell Microbiol, 8:1850). Potential projects include biochemical purification of chromatin remodeling complexes and functional characterization of parasite mutants defective in histone modifying enzymes. Microbial Geneticist - Assistant Professor
The Department of Microbiology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position (http://www.bio.umass.edu/micro/).

Postdoctoral position in Toxoplasma Pathogenesis
Postdoctoral Positions - Molecular and Immunological Basis of Toxoplasma Pathogenesis
Two Postdoctoral positions are currently available in the new laboratory of Dr. Michael Grigg in the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases at the NIAID, NIH in Bethesda, MD.
Research in the lab aims to understand the molecular, cellular and immunological basis of Toxoplasma gondii virulence and pathogenesis, a prevalent protozoan parasite of humans and animals. We are looking for highly motivated individuals to investigate the following projects: 1) Investigating the role of sexual meioses in the evolution of virulent strains; 2) Functional genomic, genetic and bioinformatic approaches to characterize virulence factors that contribute to pathogenesis; 3) Bioimaging the host-pathogen interaction in vivo and in situ to visualize host immune cells responding to parasite infected targets; and 4) Regulation of gene expression, structural and immunological analyses of a superfamily of parasite cell surface antigens that regulate host immunity and parasite infectivity.
Positions require a PhD or MD and less than 5 years prior experience in biochemistry, molecular biology and/or immunology. Salary is based on the current NIH postdoctoral fellow payscale.
