The Trip:
Take a two-hour excursion on the MBL’s collecting vessel the R/V Gemma. Leave from the MBL dock in Eel Pond, Woods Hole, and head out to Vineyard Sound, passing historic Nobska lighthouse commissioned in 1876. The Gemma will travel approximately two miles off-shore to a site where marine organisms will be collected. Deploying a scallop dredge and a plankton net, the crew will obtain a collection of creatures for passengers to examine. The organisms will be identified and the excursion leaders will discuss the biology of each animal and how they are used for research at the MBL. Fascinating information regarding the history of the local area will be shared during the trip, and landmarks along the shoreline will be identified. Passengers are encouraged to ask questions on a host of topics including commercial fishing and research equipment, collecting methods, biology, the history of the Woods Hole scientific community, and the Gemma’s state of the art navigation equipment. An optional tour of the Marine Resources facility can be provided, if desired, following the trip on the Gemma.

Capacity:
The MBL 50′ collecting vessel, R/V Gemma, can accommodate up to 20 passengers.

Scheduling:
Gemma excursions are available Monday through Friday and may be scheduled for morning or afternoon. Morning trips generally leave between 8 and 9 a.m. and afternoon trips leave around 1:00 p.m., but departure times can be scheduled to accommodate the passengers.
