The National Association of Marine Laboratories represents 120 institutions of all sizes and marine science expertise. NAML has traditionally been focused on working among the marine labs to improve the quality of our programs and our effectiveness in accomplishing our academic missions. With a renewed focus by the Federal Government on ocean, coastal and Great Lakes research and education issues, in 2005 NAML decided to become more active in the public policy arena. NAML focuses its government relations activities on promoting the use of science for the public good, increasing the quality of ocean, coastal and Great Lakes science and education, and improving the level of funding for both programs and marine science infrastructure.
NAML conducts its public policy activities through a variety of mechanisms. The members of NAML's Committee on Public Policy (CPP) and the Board of Directors volunteer their time and expertise, working with NAML's outside consultants, to achieve NAML's policy goals. These groups provide guidance to the entire organization and mobilize the full membership when needed. NAML utilizes its membership of 120 marine labs in nearly every coastal congressional district to provide a thoughtful and powerful voice for ocean, coastal and Great Lakes issues nationwide.
The charge of the CPP is to:
- Identify key public policy issues germane to the membership of NAML.
- In conjunction with the NAML Board of Directors, set advocacy priorities among and between those identified public policy issues.
- Inform and make recommendations for action to the NAML Board of Directors regarding key public policy issues.
- Provide one or more mechanisms by which NAML members can interact with and make recommendations for action to the CPP.
- Provide regular updates on CPP activities to the Board of Directors and the NAML membership.
- Cooperate with science and public policy committees of other societies, associations, and organizations in gathering and sharing information and in advancing NAML's public policy agenda.
- Provide guidance and direction to NAML's government relations consultants.
- Provide for the professional development of its members.
