Arthur M. Sussman

sussmann-ARWith great sorrow, we report the passing of Arthur M. Sussman, who served as Interim President and Director of the MBL in 2014-15. Art, 73, died August 10 in Chicago due to complications associated with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. The MBL flag will be lowered in Art’s memory.

As the leadership of the University of Chicago led the search for the MBL’s 15th president and director, Art, a former general counsel and vice president for administration at the university, provided a broad range of operational support to the MBL starting in June 2014. He stepped into the role of Interim President and Director from November 2014 until Hunt Willard’s arrival in January 2015. In that time, he learned a great deal about operations at MBL and established close working relationships with researchers and administrative staff across the MBL, as well as with members of the Woods Hole community.

We extend our thoughts and prayers to Art’s wife, Rita, to the Sussman family, and to all his colleagues at the University of Chicago and elsewhere who will miss his wise counsel, his insights, and his wonderful sense of humor.
