candelasIt is with sadness that we share news of the passing of MBL Society member Dr. Graciela Candelas, a Distinguished Professor at the University of Puerto Rico Río Piedras Campus, who died on May 22, 2016.

Dr. Candelas first came to the MBL in 1961 as a student in the Physiology course. A few years later she was invited by developmental biologist Alberto Monroy to work with him as a participant in the FERGAP program (Fertilization and Gamete Physiology Research Training Program). In 1968, she joined the MBL Society.

Dr. Candelas conducted her early work at the MBL on protein synthesis in sea urchins and later in spiders.   She was part of the University of Puerto Rico for more than 60 years and was mentor to more than a hundred students.
