Leyla DeToledo Morrell

The MBL notes with sadness that Society Member Dr. Leyla DeToledo Morrell passed away suddenly on January 20, 2015 at the age of 73. The MBL flag will be lowered in her memory.  Dr. DeToledo Morrell spent many years at the MBL as a Visiting Investigator and Library Reader beginning in the early 1980s.

Throughout her professional life, Dr. DeToledo Morrell studied the mechanisms of learning in the brain. She was a also leader in the field of Alzheimer’s research, giving hope for early treatment interventions by identifying risk factors for developing Alzheimer’s disease. She leaves a solid legacy of scientific discovery and achievement. She will be missed by her family and by the many scientists around the world for whom she was an inspiring colleague.

Dr. DeToledo Morrell was born August 6, 1941 in Istanbul, Turkey. She was the devoted wife of the late Dr. Frank Morrell, beloved daughter of the late Marco DeToledo and Vicky (DeToledo) Asch, and step-father Gorun Asch. She was the caring step-mother of Seth (Laura), Paul (Kevin), Michael, and Suzanna (David). She was deeply cherished by her grandchildren Anna Rose, Daniel, Natalie, and Nolan; a loving cousin of the Keribar family and a devoted colleague and friend. She was also a great patron of the arts.
