It is with sadness that we report the passing of former MBL Senior Scientist Dr. Monica Riley, a pioneer in the fields of molecular biology and microbial genome analysis. Dr. Riley died from heart failure on October 11, 2013 in Richmond, CA. She was 87 years old. The MBL flag will be lowered in her honor.
Dr. Riley first came to the MBL during a sabbatical year while on the faculty of Stony Brook University. Shortly after, in 1992, she moved to the MBL full-time and was appointed Senior Scientist in the newly established Bay Paul Center where she was one of four founding faculty members. In 2006, she retired to Richmond, CA to be closer to her family, however she continued to collaborate with the Bay Paul Center as a Senior Scholar until July, 2012. Dr. Riley was a member of the MBL Corporation from 1991 to 2006.
Dr. Riley graduated from Smith College and received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from University of California, Berkeley under the direction of Arthur Pardee. Following postdoctoral training at Stanford University, she joined the faculty of the Bacteriology Department at University of California, Davis. Dr. Riley moved to the Department of Biochemistry at Stony Brook University where she rose to full professor.
