Richard “Chip” Morse

It is with sadness that we report the passing of MBL Board member Richard “Chip” Morse who died on December 14, 2014.  Mr. Morse served as a member of the Board since 2011 and was chair of the Campus Planning and Physical Assets committee. The MBL flag will be lowered in his memory.

Mr. Morse graduated from Princeton University with a degree in economics. After a year in General Electric Company’s business training program, he served as the communications and legal officer on a U.S. Navy destroyer with a tour of duty in the waters off Vietnam. He received his law degree from Boston University School of Law in 1970.  Mr. Morse was a partner in the Boston law firm of Hutchins & Wheeler. In 1993 he co-founded the law firm of Morse Barnes-Brown Pendleton in Waltham and in 2004 became Of Counsel.

An avid boater and long-time resident of Woods Hole, Mr. Morse was involved in numerous professional and charitable activities centered on ocean science and preservation of the coastline. In addition to serving on the MBL Board he was a member of the WHOI Corporation, Vice Chair of the Board of the Coalition for Buzzards Bay, and Chair of the Quissett Harbor Preservation Trust.

Mr. Morse is survived by his wife Susan, their children Laura and Richard, and grandchildren.  His family is planning a memorial service to be held in the spring of 2015.
