Walter J. Salmon

With sadness, the MBL notes the passing of Walter J. Salmon of Brookline and Falmouth who died on March 8, 2015.  Professor Salmon had served as a member of the Board since 2007 and during his tenure was a member of the Finance & Investment and Nominating Committees. The MBL flag will be lowered in his memory.

Professor Salmon was the Stanley Roth, Sr. Professor of Retailing, Emeritus, at the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration. He earned his BBA from the City College of New York and his MBA and DBA from Harvard Business School.   Professor Salmon had been a member of the Harvard Business School faculty since 1956 where his major fields of interests were Consumer Marketing and Retail Distribution.

Professor Salmon served on numerous corporate boards during his career including The Neiman Marcus Group, Party City, Inc., PetsMart, Inc., Stride Rite Shoes, and the Quaker Oats Company, and, most recently, Cumberland Farms. He was also a domain advisor to the Highland Consumer Fund.

Professor Salmon was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Marjorie, who passed away in May, 2014. He is survived by daughters Elizabeth Frank, Joan Salmon, and Stephanie Shenton, six grandchildren, and partner Marsha J. Goldberg.

Services will be held at Temple Israel, 477 Longwood Ave., Boston on Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at 10 AM. Internment will follow at the Lincoln Cemetery, Lexington Rd., Lincoln. Memorial observance will be held at his late residence until 8:00 PM and Thursday from 2:00 to 8:00 PM.
