With deep sadness, the MBL reports the passing of Corporation Member and long-time visiting researcher Dr. William D. Cohen on August 5, 2008. The MBL flag will be lowered in his memory once the weather clears.
The following was sent to us by his family.
Dr. Cohen found great joy at the MBL conducting fundamental research, mentoring graduate and undergraduate students, and making extensive use of the world-class facilities, including the tennis courts by the beach. He first came to Woods Hole in the summer of 1962 as a graduate student in the lab of Tay Hayashi, and then for over 30 consecutive years beginning in the mid 1970s. Husband, father, grandfather, brother, scientist, mentor and friend, his brilliance, humor, generosity, gentleness and wonder embraced the smallest cell, the farthest star, and all of us. He will be loved always. Bill leaves wife Marion, children David and Sarah, daughter-in-law Patricia, granddaughter Daphne, and brother Joel.
Friends and loved ones are invited to attend his funeral Thursday, August 7, 1:30 PM at Gutterman Musicant Funeral Home, 402 Park St, Hackensack, NJ 07601. See http://www.GuttermanMusicantWien.com for directions. There will also be an informal celebration of Dr. Cohen’s life in Woods Hole next summer.
