1.0 Library Desk or Office Rentals:
Desks and a small number of offices are located within the stacks of the Lillie Library and are available on a space available basis for scholarly purposes. A locking drawer or small filing cabinet is provided at each desk. Storage of scholarly or other material is not permitted other than what can be accommodated in the drawer and filing cabinet.

    1.1 Eligibility
    Desk rentals are available on a weekly to year-round basis to individuals in the following categories:
    Current MBL Scientists with an active appointment at MBL, and faculty, postdoctoral fellows, or students with an active academic or research appointment at an institution of higher education, government or non-profit research organization.

    Retired faculty or researcher at an institution of higher education, government or non-profit research organization.

    Preference will be given to individuals with scientific appointments at Woods Hole scientific institutions (MBL, WHOI, WHRC, USGS, NOAA, SEA) and the University of Chicago.

    Office rentals are available on a weekly to year-round basis to MBL Scientists with an active appointment at MBL. Office assignments for the summer months (June-August) will begin on March 15. Preference for assignment will be based on current appointments at MBL and on demonstrated need for MBLWHOI Library resources.

    Note that library offices are intended for scholarly purposes in a quiet library setting. The offices are not sound proof, and offices may not be suitable for those whose work includes extended conversations.

    1.2 Privileges:
    • Physical access to the Lillie Library 7:00 am to 11:00 pm.
    • Library materials located off-site can be requested and picked up in the Library office.
    • Book borrowing for the duration of desk/office rental.
    • Access to MBL Archives and Rare Books collections by appointment.
    • Reference assistance by Library staff members.
    • Wireless internet access.
    • Access to electronic resources on-site at Library workstations.
    • Eligibility for a red MBL parking sticker.
    • Eligibility to request housing at MBL (when available) (see below)

    The following services are not available to those renting desks or offices:
    • Remote access to electronic resources
    • Interlibrary loan services

2.0 Housing Eligibility:
Housing through MBL may be available for people renting desks or offices in the library during non-peak times of the year; housing is generally not available for individuals registered with the Library (i.e. desk/office renters and fellowship recipients) during the peak summer season from July 1 – August 22. Please note that assignment of a desk or office does not guarantee housing.
