How to Apply

To apply for a Whitman Center Award, please fill out the following form.

Completed applications are due by 11:59 pm EST, December 15, 2016.  Notification of decisions will be made by March 1, 2017.  If you have any questions about the application, the awards, or the awards process, see FAQs on Whitman Center Awards Program, email the Division of Research researchprograms@mbl.edu, or call 508-289-7173.

4. Expected Dates at MBL:
Awards require a four- to ten-week residency at the MBL.

Provide a description of the project using the following format:
  • a. Summary of proposed research and detailed technical description (6 pages maximum).
  • b. Lay language description of research project (1 page maximum).
  • c. Statement of potential impact on your career (1/2 page maximum).
  • d. Statement of why coming to the MBL is important to your proposal (1/2 page maximum).
  • e. List of previous times spent at MBL (1/2 page maximum).

10. Research Lab Space:*
MBL Research Award recipients can apply to do independent research or collaborative research with a Resident Researcher or Summer Course. Lab space for independent research will be assigned in either the Rowe or Lillie Building. Lab space for collaborative research will be assigned by the Resident Researcher or Course Director within their permanent space. Small labs in Rowe = 225 square feet; large labs in Rowe = 335 square feet; lab sizes vary in Lillie from 100 to 300 square feet. Minimum space rented is 100 square feet.
