Apply for a Whitman Center Fellowship

To apply for a Whitman Center Fellowship, please fill out the following form.

Completed applications are due by 11:59 pm EST, December 15, 2018.  Notification of decisions will be made by February 15, 2019.  If you have any questions about the application, the awards, or the awards process, see Whitman Center Fellowship FAQ, email the Division of Research, or call 508-289-7173.

If you are applying for a Whitman Center Fellowship, please do not complete a Whitman Center registration form at this time. All applicants, whether they receive a Fellowship or not, will be sent a link to register after the Fellowships have been announced even though the deadline will have passed.

4. Expected Dates at MBL:

Awards require a four- to ten-week residency at the MBL.

  • a. Summary of proposed research to be conducted at the MBL during the project period and detailed technical description sufficient to evaluate the project (6 pages maximum). This section should address the feasibility of doing the research at MBL and a path to long-term funding of the project, if appropriate. If you are applying for a second or third Whitman Fellowship you should address how the proposed research builds on previous awards, if appropriate.
  • b. References (1 page maximum, any standard reference style)
  • c. Lay language description of research project (1 page maximum). This page may be shared with donors if your application is accepted for a named award.
  • d. Statement of potential impact on your career (1/2 page maximum).
  • e. Statement of why coming to the MBL is important to your proposal (1/2 page maximum).
  • f. List of previous times spent at MBL (1/2 page maximum).

Please note: because Whitman Fellows receive monetary support from the MBL, recipients must have a valid visa and cannot enter through the visa waiver program.
14. Personal Information: Your decision to provide the following information is optional. It is being collected to improve the quality of our awards program and the effectiveness of our advertising. It will not be used in any way to evaluate your qualifications for an award or shown to any members of the award committee. Once awards have been made, it may be used to determine your eligibility for award funds restricted to specific age, gender, or underrepresented groups.
