Returning to Haiti – 05/11/12

We just purchased plane tickets for a trip to Haiti from 5/11-5/18. The purpose of this trip will be to assist with the first fish harvest at the Henri Christophe School in Marigot when the tilapia that were stocked in the basin in November 2011 will be harvested and sold in local market to raise money for the school. We will also be assisting with an Aquaculture Training Course in Leogane to teach local organizations about sustainable aquaculture practices in Haiti. There will be a broad range of topics covered and include how to install low-resource aquaculture systems, produce alternative tilapia feed using local resources, and monitor fish health and growth. We cannot wait to return to Haiti to reconnect with friends, see how our fish have grown, and help further spread sustainable aquaculture practices throughout Haiti!

Feed Trial Update

For the last several months we have been running feed trials with tilapia to compare various fish diets that are made out of ingredients that are locally available in Haiti. The main protein source of our current diets is the presscake from an edible variety of Jatropha, which has a very similar nutritional profile as soy. This week we had our first weighing since beginning our most recent feed trials and for the first time we have a “homemade” diet that has specific growth rates (~2.6% growth/day) equal to the commercial control diet! While the trials are still ongoing, results are looking very promising and it seems like we’re close to having a successful tilapia diet that can be made in Haiti using locally produced ingredients.
