Herbaria Goes Digital - MBL Library seeking volunteers
The MBL Library has been given a small grant to create a digital library of herberia records from the Woods Hole environment to publish on the web. This publication will be made available to ecologists, local environmental groups, scholars and the general public. Creating this library, funded by WHOI Sea Grant, involves scanning 9000 herbarium sheets and entering the data from that sheet into an electronic archive. Volunteers are needed for about two hours per week each. If you're interested in learning more and/or helping with this new project please contact Sallie Giffen, MBLA Vice-President and chair of the board's library committee. Phone 508-548-8258 or email giffens@aol.com.
From the Gift Shop
The Associates Gift Shop had a very successful summer this year. Sales have been up for all of 2002 when compared to the previous four years. The line of sterling silver jewelry we introduced last year is still a strong seller, as are the new lines of children's toys and books we brought to the store this season. The sweatshirts, hats and tee-shirts with the MBL logo remain perennial favorites. We'd like to take this opportunity to thank this season's Gift Shop Volunteers. Their countless hours of unpaid assistance help us lower expenses, thus allowing us to allocate more money to the Associates Fellowships. And thanks to the many, many Associates who shopped with us! Look for our ANNUAL HOLIDAY SALE for two weeks in December (Dec.9th-20th, 2002). We'll be offering 20% off everything in the shop. And remember you can always shop with us via the internet or via phone (508.289.7230) during shop hours. |
