MBL Associate Fellows - Summer 2003

Four young scientists were awarded Associates Fellowships, which are funded by Gift Shop proceeds: Suzanne Ayvazian, Ph.D., Research Scientist in the Department of Fisheries, Western Australia Marine Fisheries Laboratory, North Beach, Australia; Francesca Gherardi, Ph.D., Researcher in the Department of Animal Biology and Genetics at the University of Florence, Italy; Nevin Alan Lambert, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, Georgia, and Matthew Larkum, Ph.D., a Junior Professor in the Department of Physiology at the University of Bern, Switzerland. We were very fortunate that both Nevin Lambert and Francesca Gherardi were able to share some of their research with the MBL Associates Board during their July and August meetings.

Other News

Although the weather wasn't quite as cooperative as we would have liked, we did finally manage to get four boatloads of Associates and their guests out on collecting trips in Vineyard Sound during July and August, courtesy of the R/V Gemma and its informative and enthusiastic crew.

The MBL Associates Annual Brunch & Meeting took place on Sunday, June 22nd at the MBL's Swope Center. A buffet line offered hot foods, fresh fruits and pastries. A welcome by Board President Ruth Ann Laster was followed by a talk by MBL Director William Speck, and various committee reports. Retiring board members Kitty Brown, Alice Knowles and Becky Lash were thanked for their good work and given parting gifts. (Minutes of the Annual Meeting are available in the MBL Associates office in Candle House 303 on the MBL campus).

The wet weather may have enhanced this summer's annual Foreign Students' Picnic at Woody and Hanna Hastings' home in Woods Hole on June 22nd. More than 70 students, faculty members and Associates shared good food and conversation in every corner of the Hastings first floor, as part of their introduction to life at the Lab and in the Hole. A special thanks to Associate Barbara Wheeler for all of her many years of terrific work coordinating this event.

Looking through the "catch of the day" is part of the fun aboard the Gemma. The crew always has lots of information to share about the haul.
