Fall 2004 | Return to Index
From the Gift Shop
For the summer of 2004 we had two recipients of our Associates Fellowships; John Henson, Ph.D., from Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, and Eduardo Perozo, Ph.D., from the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center in Charlottesville. (As you know, the proceeds from the Associates Gift Shop help fund fellowships for young scientists.)
The Associates often receive letters of thanks from the recipients of our fellowships. After summarizing his research accomplishment over the summer, Dr. Henson shared these thoughts, which offer a wonderful glimpse of the summer scientists' experiences here.
In addition to doing research in the lab I also took advantage of the many other scientific opportunities at the MBL. This included going to a number of the Physiology course lectures, helping a group of Physiology course students with a research project, attending the cytoskeleton evening lectures and the Friday Evening Lectures. These lectures and seminars were a great chance for me and my student to access the "leading edge" of research in my field of cytoskeletal biology and were invaluable as I plan my next series of experiments.
On a personal level, it was a real treat to be able to share the magic of Woods Hole with my family this summer. Having been profoundly influenced by this special place as a graduate student some twenty years ago, it was wonderful to see my two teen-age children discover the unique nature of Woods Hole.
Call for Volunteers
The MBL Associates has lots of opportunities for you to help the Laboratory.
We're in need of volunteers for:
- the Gift Shop
- the summer Tour program
- MBL Library projects, especially the Herbarium project
- help with events (like the International Students Picnic)
- and other projects as they arise.
If you'd like to help, please call Susan Joslin at the MBL Associates office, 508.289.7281, or e-mail her at sjoslin@mbl.edu.
