- excerpt from the Bylaws of the MBL Corporation

A membership application is available upon request in the Director's Office of the Laboratory, Candle House, 7 MBL Street, Woods Hole, MA. 02543-1015. You can also call (508) 289-7300, e-mail mdonovan@mbl.edu, or download an application below. Note: forms are in PDF format.

Membership Applications State:

Proposals for membership in the Corporation shall be made to the Science Council upon a regular form, endorsed by two members of the Corporation, at any time. The Science Council will review these applications and will forward those that are approved to the Annual Meeting of the Corporation for consideration for election.

With recognition that rigid and completely standardized requirements for membership in the Corporation of the Marine Biological Laboratory are neither practicable nor desirable, it is recommended that members of the Corporation shall, in general, be selected from among persons who have participated in the educational or research programs of the Laboratory, and who, by papers published over a period of several years shall have demonstrated a capacity for sustained scientific productiveness.

Dues and Privileges:

Members of the Corporation have voting privileges (Life Members do not vote), access to the MBL/WHOI Library, participate on Standing Committees of the Corporation, and receive a subscription to the Biological Bulletin (Life Members do not receive the Biological Bulletin). Members pay dues at a rate of $100 per year. Life Members do not pay dues.

Newly elected beginning investigator (who have received their doctoral degree within the past five years) members of the Corporation are allowed to pay dues at a reduced rate of $50 per year for the first five years of their membership and receive all the privileges of membership except a subscription to the Biological Bulletin. Thereafter, their dues will increase to the standard rate.

As a Member of the MBL Corporation you belong to an organization that is, today, a world center for research, education, and training in biology, having been established in 1888. You, as a member, participate in continuing this significant role in the biological sciences.
