David Mark Welch

David Mark Welch is MBL’s Director of the Division of Research. In this role he oversees the MBL’s research programs and resource centers, the MBL-WHOI Library, and Office of Sponsored Programs. He is also a Senior Scientist and Director of the Josephine Bay Paul Center for Comparative Molecular Biology and Evolution, where his laboratory studies genome evolution, DNA damage prevention and repair, and the comparative biology of aging. He remains active in facilitating microbiome-related research as PI on several grants, as co-Director of the MBL summer course STAMPS, and as Associate Director of the Microbiome Center, a collaboration between the University of Chicago, MBL, and Argonne National Lab. He also maintains an affiliation with the Department of Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, and Biochemistry at Brown University. Dr. Mark Welch received his B.A. in Biology from Earlham College and Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Harvard University. He joined the MBL as a Visiting Scientist in 2001 and has chaired or served on numerous MBL committees.
