We study the marine cyanobacterium Synechococcus, a key marine primary producer and ubiquitous phytoplankter, especially in coastal regions. We aim to better understand how environmental variables, microbial interactions, and underlying diversity structure affect population abundance and dynamics.  We use a combination of in situ, high resolution time series observations from the Martha’s Vineyard Coastal Observatory (MVCO), mathematical and statistical modeling, isolated cultures and in-lab experiments to explore the above ecological questions.
