Deep Sea Volcanoes Topic of Next MBL “Science Before Supper”
WOODS HOLE, MA— The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) Associates and the Falmouth Public Library continue the 2014-2015 season of “Science Before Supper,” with a presentation by MBL oceanographer Julie Huber who will discuss “Exploding Volcanoes and Microbial Life in the Deep Sea.” The talk, the second in a series designed especially for non-scientists, will be held on Thursday, January 8 at 5:00 PM in the Hermann Foundation Meeting Room of the Falmouth Public Library, 300 Main Street, Falmouth. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Huber is an ocean-going microbiologist who studies microbial life at hydrothermal vents and in the sub-seafloor. She has logged more than a year at sea, including her leadership of a Schmidt Ocean Institute research cruise in September 2013 to Axial Seamount, an active volcano 300 miles off the Oregon coast.
Huber holds several positions at the MBL, including associate scientist and associate director of the Bay Paul Center for Comparative Molecular Biology and Evolution, and assistant professor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Brown University (through the Brown-MBL Partnership and Graduate Program). Huber is also associate director of the Center for Dark Energy Biosphere Investigations (C-DEBI), a National Science Foundation-supported Science and Technology Center at the University of Southern California. Interdisciplinary research at C-DEBI is focused on discovering and describing the microbes in the rocks and sediments of the ocean floor.
Huber received her Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography from the University of Washington. She joined the Bay Paul Center in 2005.
