Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I am writing to let you know of my intention to retire as President and Director of the MBL at the end of this year. It has been my great privilege and honor to lead the MBL for the past six and one-half years and I am very proud of our accomplishments. I was brought in to grow the science of the MBL and, with the support of the entire MBL Community, we have done so.

Together, we have exceeded the goals of the ambitious Catalyst Campaign which concludes this year. Our physical plant has been revitalized and our scientific and educational capacity increased. MBL science continues to receive international recognition at the highest levels.

Having just passed my 70th birthday, I believe the time is now right to make a change and turn my attention to other scientific endeavors. I wish to express my deep gratitude to you for your continued commitment and dedication to the MBL. Sally joins me in saying that we have enjoyed enormously being part of the MBL family and in working with you to advance this special institution.

With best regards,

Gary Borisy

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

As you know, Gary Borisy will be retiring as President and Director of the MBL at the end of this year.

I would like to take a moment to recognize Gary for his years of service to the MBL, as well as his distinguished career as a biologist. His dedication to this institution's dual mission of driving scientific discovery and catalyzing the careers and contributions of promising and influential biologists has been unparalleled. I, together with the rest of the MBL Board, wish him the very best in his retirement. He will be missed by scientists and staff alike.

The Board of Trustees will be moving quickly to identify new leadership who, like Gary, embodies the commitment to biological discovery that is at the heart of the MBL, and who will lead us forward to a strong and sustainable future. Gary will remain in an advisory role through the end of the year to assure a seamless transition.

Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions. We are confident that the path ahead for the MBL is a solid one, and that together we will retain our unique culture and character, and continue to drive debate and discovery within the broader scientific community where we hold a leadership role.

Best regards,

John W. Rowe

Chairman of the Board
