Great White Sharks in New England: “Jaws” or Treasure? Shark Expert To Give Talk for Kids at MBL, April 18
MBL, WOODS HOLE, MA— Shark expert Dr. Greg Skomal, author of The Shark Handbook, and senior fisheries expert with Massachusetts Marine Fisheries, will give a free talk for grade-school students titled “The Great White Shark in New England: Jaws or Wildlife Treasure?” on Thursday, April 18at 3:00 PM in the MBL’s (Marine Biological Laboratory) Lillie Auditorium, 7 MBL Street in Woods Hole. The event, sponsored by the MBL Associates, continues the group’s tradition of offering fun, educational events for students during school vacation week. No registration is required.
As the state of Massachusetts’ leading shark expert, Dr. Skomal has spearheaded efforts to tag and track great white sharks off Cape Cod. Dr. Skomal, who earned a Ph.D. from Boston University and teaches at the University of Massachusetts School for Marine Science and Technology in New Bedford, has studied sharks from the Arctic Circle to the Central Pacific and has been featured in numerous films and television programs, including the Discovery Channel’s “Shark Week.”
Dr. Skomal currently leads the Massachusetts Shark Research Program. Much of his current work centers on the use of acoustic telemetry, satellite-based technology, and animal-borne imaging to assess the physiological impacts of capture stress on the post-release survivorship and behavior of sharks.
Free parking for the April 18 talk is available at the MBL’s grass lot on Bar Neck Road (across from the Woods Hole Yacht Club). Metered street parking is also available.
