MBL scientist Loretta Roberson appears (0:35) in this broadcast news segment about seaweed (macroalgae) aquaculture on Univision, the nation’s largest provider of Spanish-language content. Roberson is the principal investigator for “Techniques for Tropical Seaweed Cultivation,” a large-scale project to establish seaweed farms in U.S. waters, including off of Florida, Puerto Rico and Belize.  Watch the segment….

Segment Synopsis: This sustainable alternative, which helps to maintain a clean and healthy environment, consists of generating crops inside the water and, according to expert scientists, the planting of algae and mussels can become a rich source of vitamins, proteins and minerals that are they would use in various products. California is currently fine-tuning details to begin implementing this practice, which has also been very successful in countries such as China, the Philippines, and Indonesia.
