The Marine Biological Laboratory is saddened to share the passing of Dr. Colin S. Izzard, a longtime member of the MBL community, who died on March 4, 2026.

Dr. Izzard first came to the MBL as an independent researcher (now known as a Whitman Scientist), conducting research during several summers between 1967 and 1972. Beginning in 1972, he was a Corporation Member (now MBL Society Member), reflecting his longstanding commitment to the Laboratory.

He also made significant contributions to MBL's educational mission. Dr. Izzard served on the faculty of the Optical Microscopy and Imaging in the Biomedical Sciences course beginning in 1983 and directed the course for many years between 1988 and 2012, helping to train generations of scientists in advanced microscopy techniques.

We extend our condolences to Dr. Izzard's family, friends, colleagues, and the many students and researchers whose lives he touched throughout his distinguished career.
