Kenyon Tweedell

It is with sadness that we share the passing of Society Emeritus member Kenyon S. Tweedell who died on March 30, 2021 at the age of 97. The MBL flag will be lowered in his memory.

Dr. Tweedell was a Professor at the University of Notre Dame, where he taught Pre-Med Embryology, Developmental, and Tumor Biology from 1958 until his retirement in 1994. His first summer at the MBL was in 1950 when he served as a Research Assistant to S. Meryl Rose. He continued spending summers in Woods Hole as a Corporation Member (now MBL Society) serving on the Buildings and Ground and Nominating Committees and as an Independent Investigator studying regeneration in marine animals, Tubularia and Pectinaria. From 1994 to 2019, as a Library Reader, he continued his research on stems cells and regeneration. He published the first of several papers on stem cell research in Scientific World in August of 2004.

A funeral was held in South Bend, Indiana at St. Joseph’s Church on April 9, 2021. He was interred with military honors at the Cedar Grove Cemetery at Notre Dame.
