Woods Hole Science and Technology Education Partnership (WHSTEP) will celebrate its 34th anniversary on Wednesday, May 10, from 4 to 6 PM at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s Clark building on the Quissett campus. Guest speaker Greg Skomal will give a presentation, “Living with White Sharks.”

WHSTEP is a partnership of schools, scientific institutions, businesses and community resources. Its purpose is to support, promote and expand science and technology education and science literacy in the participating communities of Falmouth, Mashpee and Bourne.

The group was founded in 1989 by Megan Jones, who was director of the Massachusetts Centers for Excellence, Mary Wright, former member of the state Board of Education, and Catherine Norton, MBL librarian and former Falmouth school committee member. They recognized that the wealth of resources in the Woods Hole scientific community should be shared with local schools.

They approached Harlyn Halvorson, then director of Marine Biological Laboratory, with their idea for a partnership, and told him, ”We need to do this!” Read rest of the article here.
