Friends of the MBL

Discover the MBL

For more than 125 years, the Marine Biological Laboratory has played a unique and pivotal role in fundamental biological discovery. Since its founding in 1888, the MBL has drawn the world’s greatest minds in science to Woods Hole, Massachusetts, to carry out some of their most creative and far-reaching work. More than 50 scientists affiliated with the MBL have been recognized with Nobel Prizes.

Each year, more than 1,000 scientists and students convene in Woods Hole to utilize the unique resources and environment at the MBL, with a strategic focus around four key areas:

  • Biological Discovery in Marine Organisms
  • Ecology and Climate Change
  • Microbial Key to Ocean, Planet, and Human Health
  • Seeing the Invisible: Integrating Imaging, Computation, and Biology at the MBL

The MBL’s educational programs emphasize immersive, discovery-based learning. Our advanced research training courses for pre- and postdoctoral trainees are world-renowned and taught by faculty who are leaders in their fields. The MBL also hosts courses for the University of Chicago and other colleges and universities as well as dozens of workshops and conferences. MBL courses are often called “transformative” by students, who are often empowered to pursue science at the very highest levels, informing the manner in which they approach their graduate, postdoctoral or independent research programs.

Celebrate the Power of Friends!

Who Joins the Friends of the MBL?

The Friends of the MBL are ambassadors, acting as a link between the MBL and the public, planning and promoting community lectures and events such as the MBL Falmouth Forum, or serving as tour guides and exhibit center docents to help others “Discover the MBL.”

Help us bridge the gap across the Eel Pond Bridge and further engage the MBL with the broader Cape Cod community and beyond.

Supporting Discovery

The Friends of the MBL not only to inform and educate, but also help raise support for the MBL’s important work. The DISCOVERY FUND helps to fund ALL research and education at the MBL, strengthening every aspect of our mission. It provides tuition support, course materials, and laboratory supplies for the many students and faculty participating in MBL courses each year. The Discovery Fund also supports MBL’s resident research centers, visiting scientists, and a wide range of fellowships—supplementing grants, investments, and other funding sources.
