Current Biology has published an entertaining, in-depth interview with MBL Senior Scientist Roger Hanlon, who travels the world as a SCUBA diver studying the behavioral ecology of squid, octopus, cuttlefish (the cephalopods) and other marine organisms.
CB: Why are you so enamored with cephalopods?
Roger Hanlon: They are weird but exciting, and so remarkably capable despite having their head on their feet — hence ‘ceph alo pods’. ... Jet propulsion, numerous keen senses, substantial learning capabilities, a large brain and a complicated sex life all add up to an evolutionary oddity that fascinates me.
