Procedures for Implementing the MBL Alcohol Use Policy G.1.12

Policy G.1.12 governs the possession or use of alcohol at the Marine Biological Laboratory. We recognize that members of the MBL community may wish to consume alcohol at social events that are not MBL-wide officially sanctioned events (as defined in Policy G.1.12). This document describes the procedures for alcohol consumption effective for the period May 1, 2015 through December 31, 2015. Note that in addition to G.1.12, MBL Policy G.1.19 (Code of Conduct) applies as well.

1.0 MBL COURSES AND OTHER EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

  • Alcohol may be consumed at events only if approved in advance in accordance with this policy.
  • All requests and approvals must be made in writing prior to the event. Request forms are available from Candle House (room 303).
  • Approval authority is vested in either the Director or the Chief Operating Officer.
  • Approval will be considered only for a single event to mark a specific occasion or function, not for a recurring series of events. No MBL funds may be used to purchase alcohol except for officially sanctioned MBL events.

2.0 OTHER MBL GROUPS (including all other groups outside of educational and conference programs, whether part of the year-round or Whitman Center research program)

  • No MBL funds may be used to purchase alcohol except for officially sanctioned MBL events

3.0 HOUSING

  • The use of alcohol is permitted by those of legal drinking age (21 years or older) in their room, apartment, cottage, or house. Residents will follow the MBL Alcohol Use Policy (G.1.12).
  • Planned events for dormitory (Swope, Ebert Hall) and apartment (Brick, Drew, Veeder, David) residents must be approved in advance and must take place in designated MBL function spaces. Request forms are available in Candle House (room 303). Approval authority is vested in the Director or Chief Operating Officer.
  • For cottage residents, reasonable sized gatherings are permitted without the requirement of a request form. Organizers and invited participants of the gathering will follow the MBL Alcohol Use Policy (G.1.12), be considerate of the neighbors, and be respectful of the MBL’s reputation.
