It is the policy and the practice of the Marine Biological Laboratory to treat all persons associated with our community in a fair and equitable manner. I would like to reaffirm the officially stated policy on Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity. It is the policy of the Marine Biological Laboratory:

  1. To select its employees, faculty, and students without discrimination against persons on the basis of race, color, religion, age, national origin, ancestry, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical or mental disability, veteran or military status, genetics, or any other protected status under applicable federal, state, or local law.  In addition, MBL has an affirmative responsibility to provide maternity leave to biological and adoptive parents.
  2. To make all employment decisions in a manner which will further the principles of equal employment opportunity.
  3. To insure that decisions regarding promotions are in accord with principles of equal employment opportunity by imposing only valid requirements for promotional opportunities.
  4. To insure that personnel actions with reference to such matters as compensation, benefits, transfers, layoffs, recall from layoffs, MBL-sponsored training, education, tuition reimbursement, and social and recreational programs will be administered without regard to race, color, religion, age, national origin, ancestry, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical or mental disability, veteran or military status, genetics, or any other protected status under applicable federal, state, or local law.

It is important that all members of the community understand that this is a policy that requires the cooperation and consideration of everyone for it to be effective. I ask all members of the MBL community to cooperate with the EEO Coordinator in order to implement our policies of Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action and to achieve our goals.

Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action laws and regulations were passed as positive actions to improve the possibilities for individuals in our society. The MBL shares in this commitment and accepts its role in their implementation.
